feelings from Dow jones Financial English Competition 2007
Honorable Dow Jones Newswires and Beijing Xinhuaonline Info &Tech Co.Ltd:First of all, please allow me to extend my greatest gratitude to both of you to give me this precious opportunity to participate in ?Dow Jones Financial English Competition 2007 and win the chance to pay a visit on ?Dow Jones Company in Beijing and Singapore headquarter. I really enjoyed this special journey.

Awarding Ceremony and Tour of Dow Jones Beijing Office

On the morning of Aug.16, I arrived in Beijing with extreme excitement and expectation. In Dow Jones Beijing office, we received a whole day of training. Here, I got an all-around understanding of ?Dow Jones, including its history, its renowned Index, efforts in IPR protection, business development and marketing activities as well as its Code of Conduct. This not only enriched my knowledge of Dow Jones but also enlarged my horizon. And then the Grand Ceremony was followed. Mr. James Dyson, Managing Editor of Dow Jones and Voilet Liu, Director of Financial Information Solution Center of Xinhuaonline awarded us the Letter of Merit which represents the excellent performance in the competition.

Happy days in Singapore

I was totally astonished by the modernity, comfort and tranquility of Changi Airport in Singapore when I stepped onto the lands of the city-country for the first time in my life. The airport was built in 1980’s, however, it can still keep up with times. Here people can enjoy ?shopping for free taxes, tasting the first-class cousin, or even surfing the Internet. All the things that you can imagine can be realized, just as being at home.
The heavy rain couldn’t reduce our passion at all. Instead, we enjoyed the unique scenery of Merlion Park, the most representative of Singapore, without bearing the stuffy weather and unceasing sweat. Many tourists who shared the same desires as ours took photos to remember this unforgettable experience.
I have been told that the law and rules in Singapore are strictly and completely stipulated, therefore, people here are safety and their lives can be protected quite well. As a college student majoring in law, I couldn’t help asking myself: why such a little country can have so good ?order? Only because it has a small area and a small population? Definitely not! The key lies in the idea of the country and the people! The criminal penalty of this country is so strict that citizens dare not to obey it in fear of the severe punishment.
On the first day of our journey in Singapore, we were lucky to have the privilege to visit the headquarter office of Dow Jones in Singapore. Here, we had free talk with Gabrilla Stern and Sumathi Vaidyanathan and had the special chance to know about Dow Jones and its products deeply and learn the company idea. The talk went quite smoothly and heatedly. We discussed the diversification of the portfolio and some latest news about Dow Jones. For example, Dow Jones agreed to be bought by News Corporation. This means the publisher of the Wall Street Journal would be owned by the media company controlled by Rupert Murdoch. In terms of the merger, Gabrilla and Sumathi were quite optimistic about Dow Jones’ future. In addition, they mentioned that a big reporter team would be dispatched in China to cover more news of this mysterious country.

Unique experience in the wonderland of Malaysia

After the tourism in Singapore, we hurried to Malaysia, the neighboring country of S’pore. Only at a distance of 10 minute’s drive, the two countries take on different natural and humanity sceneries. The race, language, ethnic customs can all convey the differences in characteristics. We visited the city of Malacca, which is famous for the voyage of Cheng Ho in Ming Dynasty in China. More than 600 years ago, this renowned Chinese Admiral embarked on his brave mission to discover new lands and spread China’s influence to Southeast Asia.
There is a famous proverb going in China: “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.” And here I felt that “ He who has never been to the Genting Highlands can not be called a person who has ever been to Malaysia.” The magnificent building, the perplexing structure, the exciting Theme Park and even the delicious buffet all left me deep impression. They can spur your passion, relax your body as well as refresh your mind. However, for me, it is not my destination in my life, but only a station in the journey of my life.

Back to China

Happy days always fly quickly! My six days’ Financial English Journey came to an end at Aug. 22nd. Many friends asked me about my feeling of this special experience, and my answer is the people’s idea! It is the spiritual part of a country especially for one in rapid development. Idea can create the culture and support the whole country! If all the people in the country have the awareness of making great contributions to their homeland, how can a country not to be a strong and prosperous one?! And another point: Do study English well! Because it is really useful especially when you step out of our motherland!
